Artificial intelligence has radically changed the way we work, communicate and search for information. ChatGPT, as one of the most well-known and popular AI tools, has been integrated into the daily lives of thousands of users worldwide. From writing texts to customer service and brainstorming, the possibilities are countless. However, how safe is its continuous and daily use?

Dangers of overuse

According to a new study from the MIT Media Lab and OpenAI, daily use of ChatGPT can negatively affect the mental health of some users, especially when done without moderation. While the majority of people use the tool in a positive way, there is evidence that a small, but not insignificant, percentage is showing signs of addiction.

Some users developed an emotional connection with ChatGPT, even treating it as a “friend.” Loneliness, isolation, or the need for someone to listen to them seems to increase this risk. In addition, there have been cases of people experiencing anxiety or distress when they did not have access to the chatbot, or when they noticed changes in its “behavior.”

Addictive behavioral patterns

Signs that indicate problematic use include:

-Excessive preoccupation and loss of control over use

-Emotional dependence

-Use for relief from loneliness or anxiety

-Neglect of other activities or interpersonal relationships

A tool created to make everyday life easier can, when used incorrectly, reduce real social contact and intensify loneliness.

Tips for healthy use of AI tools

The solution is not to stop using technology, of course, but to learn to use it properly. Here are some practical tips to avoid overdoing it:

1. Set time limits

Set a specific time frame during the day for using ChatGPT. Don't let it "leak" into every routine moment.

2. Avoid substituting human contact

ChatGPT can help you, but it cannot replace communication with friends, colleagues, or mental health professionals.

3. Don't use it for emotional support

If you feel lonely or stressed, it's more helpful to turn to real people. ChatGPT has no awareness or empathy, only a simulation of them.

4. Vary your work methods

Use other tools, write manuscripts, talk to colleagues. One-sided dependence on one system makes you vulnerable.

5. Observe your behavior

If you feel yourself becoming dependent or stressed without access to AI, take a break. Recognize the signs early.

Artificial intelligence can be a great tool, as long as it is used with awareness and moderation. The balance between technology and human contact is key. Remember that when technology is at our service, not the other way around, only then does it truly work for us!
